What Size Bathroom Fan Do I Need?
Use at least 50 CFM for a bathroom smaller than 50 square feet. From 50 to 100 square feet, start with about 1 CFM per square foot. Above 100 square feet, add 50 CFM for each toilet, shower, and standard tub, plus 100 CFM for each jetted tub.
What CFM Means for a Bathroom Exhaust Fan
CFM means cubic feet per minute. It describes how much air a ventilation fan is rated to move each minute under stated test conditions.
A nominal CFM rating is only the starting point. Small ducts, long runs, elbows, flexible duct, restrictive caps, poor makeup air, and installation problems can reduce the airflow delivered after installation.

Bathroom Fan Sizing Above 100 Square Feet
For a bathroom larger than 100 square feet, HVI guidance uses the fixtures in the room. Add 50 CFM for each toilet, shower, and standard bathtub. Add 100 CFM for each jetted tub.
An enclosed toilet room should have its own exhaust fan. A fan located across a large bathroom should not be assumed to ventilate a closed toilet compartment.
High-Ceiling Bathroom Fan Calculation
A ceiling above 8 feet increases room volume. Multiply the base CFM by ceiling height divided by 8.
For an 80-square-foot bathroom with a 10-foot ceiling: 80 × 10 ÷ 8 = 100 CFM.
Continuous and Intermittent Bathroom Ventilation
HVI guidance notes that a minimum 20 CFM continuous rate may be used in place of a 50 CFM intermittent fan in applicable designs.
A multi-speed system can run at a low continuous setting and switch to the calculated room-size or fixture-based boost setting during a shower.
How Ductwork Changes Installed Fan Performance
Long, narrow, flexible, crushed, or sharply bent ducts create resistance. Restrictive exterior caps can add more resistance. This can reduce airflow and increase sound.
The calculator gives a qualitative duct warning rather than adding a universal loss percentage. Exact delivered airflow depends on the fan curve and complete duct system.
ENERGY STAR criteria include an installed-performance relationship between airflow tested at 0.1 and 0.25 inch water gauge for certified bathroom fans.
Makeup Air for a Bathroom Exhaust Fan
Air removed by the fan must be replaced. HVI advises at least a 3/4-inch bathroom door clearance as one possible entry path. A transfer grille or another designed opening can also provide makeup air.
What Sone Rating Is Quiet?
Sones describe perceived fan sound. HVI recommends 1.0 sone or less for quiet bathroom ventilation. Lower values are quieter.
Installed sound can change with duct restriction, vibration, mounting, and construction details.
Bathroom Fan Size Example
An 8-foot by 7-foot bathroom has 56 square feet of floor area. With a 9-foot ceiling, the high-ceiling factor is 9 ÷ 8, or 1.125.
Base airflow is 56 CFM. Adjusted airflow is 56 × 1.125 = 63 CFM. Round upward to a practical nominal fan rating, such as 70 CFM.
The room volume is 504 cubic feet. A 70 CFM fan provides about 8.3 theoretical air changes per hour before installed duct losses.

Methodology and Limitations
The tool follows HVI room-size and fixture guidance, applies a ceiling adjustment above 8 feet, and rounds upward to a practical nominal fan class.
The duct review is qualitative. It does not calculate static pressure, leakage, equivalent length, or actual delivered airflow. Confirm the fan, duct, controls, electrical work, and local requirements.
